An affidavit is a statement made under oath that some fact, or set of facts, is true to the best of knowledge of the Deponent/Affiant. They are usually used to provide sworn statement of facts to the Courts or any other government agencies.
An affirmation is a solemn declaration allowed to those who conscientiously object to taking an oath, usually for religious reasons. It has the same legal effect as an oath.

A Deponent/ Affiant is the person swearing to an affidavit.
